St. Joseph Black Archives Museum

Exhibits explore such topics as slavery in Missouri, Before We Were Soldiers 1840s-1850s, Colored Soldiers in the Civil War, and the local impact of the national Civil Rights era.


The Black Archives Museum, in St. Joseph, Missiouri, honors the struggles and triumphs of St. Joseph and Buchanan County African Americans. Exhibits explore such topics as slavery in Missouri, Before We Were Soldiers 1840s-1850s, Colored Soldiers in the Civil War, and the local impact of the national Civil Rights era.


The role of such St. Joseph born musicians such as Coleman Hawkins, the Father of the Tenor Sax, is also explored. The Museum includes the Black Archives Museum Hall of Fame, which showcases the achievements and contributions of St. Joseph's Black community members in a wide variety of areas.
